Transform Your Mental Health With Gratitude

Have you ever thought about how noticing the small things you are grateful for can reshape your entire
perspective?

Developing a daily practice of gratitude has a profound impact on how we experience life.

This excellent Forbes post by Nicole McDermott dives into this topic.

McDermott defines gratitude as a “disposition or characteristic that allows an individual to perceive and appreciate life’s positive and meaningful aspects.”

Developing a gratitude practice has many benefits that are now well substantiated by scientific
research and clearly described in this article.

McDermott provides several excellent suggestions for developing a gratitude practice.
I remember my own introduction to gratitude through a Buddhist teacher, who reminded me to
appreciate the little joys we often overlook.

Developing a daily practice of noticing what you are grateful for and why you are grateful can
make a massive difference in how you experience your life.

At first, as McDermott describes, I had a lot of trouble identifying what I was grateful for.
My teacher and I were sitting outside, and she said, “Do you feel the sunshine on your face
right now, and does it feel good?”

I responded, “It certainly does, after days of rain and being inside.”
She said, “Is that something you are grateful for?”
She continued, “ Notice that beautiful flower garden over there? Are you grateful for its
presence?”

Then she asked, “Do you notice the peace and serenity here compared to a war-torn country described on the news?

“Where would you rather be?”

“Are you grateful for this peace and serenity we have right now?”

I realized that feeling the warmth of sunshine, witnessing a tranquil garden, embracing peace
amidst the chaos – these irreplaceable moments carried profound gratitude.
It’s best to think of gratitude practice as refining a skill. It takes time to develop, but with
consistent effort, you’ll uncover treasures in your daily life, build your mental strength, and
advance further in your career.
